Welcome to Beit Shalom!

We are a small but lively Progressive Jewish Community in Adelaide, South Australia.

The congregation was founded on the principles of equality and openness among members. We are inclusive of race, gender, class, ethnic background, sex, sexual orientation and ability.

At Beit Shalom you can enjoy a wide range of progressive Jewish activities. We have regular Shabbat services every Friday night and Saturday morning, when we read Torah, throughout the year.

We run services for all the Jewish holidays (see the calendar of events page in this website for details).

We have a wide range of adult and youth activities, from our Cheder on Sunday mornings to beginning Hebrew and Jewish studies.

Beit Shalom sponsors and supports the Abraham Institute, an educational organization with a multifaith reference group which promotes interfaith and intercultural dialogue and understanding. This year the Institute is presenting an ambitious program of talks called Days of Enlightenment, Nights of Despair.

Our annual Purim Spiel is a longstanding Beit Shalom tradition. Our members write an original play each year, often loosely based on a well-known movie or show, which relates the Purim story in a humorous way.

But our community offers you many other activities from a wine tasting and auction to theatre nights.

Many years we have conducted a model interfaith seder, where up to 125 non-Jews have joined us for a traditional seder. A member of Beit Shalom hosts each table, and there's fun and Jewish learning around the table. And there's always a communal seder with a wonderful array of home cooked traditional Pesach foods to enjoy.

Our Sisterhood organises occasional Shabbat dinners (onegs) after services, often followed by Israeli dancing or other activities. The Sisterhood's activities include a book club, an active catering committee, which caters for anything from a planning day to B'nei Mitzvot, various activities including theatre or film nights as part of fund raising for the shul.

Beit Shalom is a place of welcome for Jewish people and for people of all faiths and no religious faith who want to know more about our rich culture.

We are a focus of Jewish activity in Adelaide that brings people together in social, religious, cultural, spiritual and intellectual fellowship and fun.

Please, if you plan to be in Adelaide, stop by and see us. Or if you've never been to a synagogue and want to see what it's like, call the office to let us know when you plan to visit.

You don't have to be Jewish and you don't have to be religious.

Times of services and other items are available from this website.

On behalf of the congregation of Beit Shalom,

I welcome you with a hearty SHALOM!
